Spending holidays with your four-legged friend has become quite popular, and Crete is an island that offers several dog-friendly locations to make the experience easier.
If this is the first time you plan to travel with your pet, the following details might help you have a stress-free trip.
Generally speaking, dog-friendly hotels allow your dog to stay in the room with you. However, rules might change from property to property.
Some hotels might have certain restrictions or limits depending on the race or size of your pet or the number of pets that travel with you.
Usually, hotels charge an extra fee for you to stay with your pet in the same room. Sometimes, fees are estimated daily, while they might be flat for other properties. Most times, that fee is non-refundable, though.
Since other rules might apply, it’s always good to message the hotel for further information. Of course, booking ahead of time is always better. This will give you enough time to plan your pet’s trip.
When getting ready for a trip with Fido, keep in mind the following tips:
- To travel to the EU, your pet must have a working microchip (a transponder) before getting its rabies vaccination. Your vet must scan the microchip before giving your pet a rabies vaccination.
- Check out whether the hotel has enough green areas or if you can find a park or square to walk your dog nearby. A dog with plenty of exercise will be less anxious and fall asleep easily when back in the room. A happy dog is a relaxed dog!
- Confirm what every hotel needs you to have regarding pet identification, including updated ID tags, microchips, etc., and vaccines.
- Using a crate will make life easier when moving from one city to another or when reaching the hotel from the airport. It will also ensure that your dog is safe at all times.
- Respect the pet-friendly hotel rules. Carry your pet’s blanket to keep beds and furniture clean. Besides, a blanket that smells like home will put your pet at ease and help it settle.
- Pack some of your dog’s favorite snacks and chew toys to prevent your pets from chomping on the furniture. This will be key to avoiding unexpected fines or fees.
- Also, ensure your dog isn’t muddy or carries tons of sand before entering the room.
- Finally, stock up on poop bags and use them when your pet goes to the toilet.
