Adjoining rooms are usually located next to one another; to access one room, it’s necessary to leave the other.

Connecting rooms, on the other hand, are also next to each other, but they are connected through a dedicated door that can be locked (and might share the bathroom), and there is no need to leave the room through the main door to access the second room.
