Easy Christmas Appetizers You Can Make in Under 20 Minutes
The holidays are my favorite chaos: the lights, the music, the smell of cinnamon and pine filling our home.
And somehow, amidst wrapping paper, cat antics, and last-minute gift hunting, I always need appetizers that are fast, festive, and fun.

A Cozy, Chaotic Christmas in My Kitchen

Every year, my home transforms into a merry little hub. Tolis is in charge of hanging the lights (sometimes upside down), my kids sneak tastes of cookie dough whenever I turn my back, and I bounce between wrapping presents and making sure our cats don’t redecorate the tree.
Amid all the joyful chaos, I still want our table to feel magical, full of color, flavor, and cheer.
Some of my favorite dishes, the ones that make Christmas feel like Christmas, actually come from far away. I can’t imagine celebrating without the flavors I grew up with in Argentina — recipes that have traveled with me across the world and now live in our Greek kitchen.
My Russian salad, the way I make it with plenty of tuna, is a must. And my Waldorf salad, with heaps of Roquefort cheese, is non-negotiable.

Even though the weather in Greece is completely different from Argentina — where Christmas is bright and summery — I still need my share of these dishes on the table. They remind me of my roots, my family, and the way the holidays should taste, no matter where I am.
That’s why I love appetizers that can be made in under 20 minutes. Quick enough to prep between wrapping paper disasters and cookie baking, yet impressive enough that guests think I spent all day in the kitchen.
Over the years, I’ve curated a list of favorites — a mix of cold bites, warm treats, sweet and savory snacks — all festive, all easy, and all guaranteed to disappear fast.
Here’s a personal guide to 23 Christmas appetizers that have become staples in our holiday celebrations, along with the little details that make them special.
1. Caprese skewers

Fresh cherry tomatoes and soft mozzarella balls threaded with bright green basil leaves, finished with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
Each skewer is a burst of freshness in every bite, the sweetness of the tomatoes balanced by the creamy mozzarella and the aromatic basil. They’re festive, colorful, and look like tiny edible Christmas ornaments.
This is a recipe my Italian friend Marta gave me and I cannot thank her enough! She has her own appetizer selection too, check it here!
Ingredients: cherry tomatoes, mini mozzarella balls, fresh basil leaves, balsamic glaze, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
2. Shrimp cocktail shooters

Cooked shrimp are nestled over a dollop of cocktail sauce in small individual cups or glasses, making them perfectly bite-sized for guests to grab and enjoy.
Each cup can be garnished with a tiny wedge of lemon, adding a brightness that balances the shrimp. Elegant yet effortless, these little shooters feel like a fancy appetizer, but take only minutes to assemble — ideal for a festive holiday table when you want something impressive without the stress.
Ingredients: cooked shrimp, cocktail sauce, lemon wedges, fresh parsley.
3. Prosciutto-wrapped melon bites

I wrap cubes of melon in thin slices of prosciutto, creating a perfect combination of sweet and salty in each bite.
The melon keeps them light and the prosciutto adds a savory depth, making them disappear almost as soon as you place them on the tray. Toothpicks make them easy to pick up, and the colors instantly brighten the appetizer table.
Ingredients: cantaloupe or honeydew melon, prosciutto slices, toothpicks.
4. Russian salad with tuna

This is my non-negotiable holiday dish — creamy, flavorful, and utterly nostalgic. I bound together diced potatoes, carrots, and peas with a light, tangy (I add extra lemon juice) mayonnaise, and then I mix in plenty of flaked tuna.
Every bite reminds me of Christmases in Argentina, and even here in Greece, no holiday table feels complete without it. I often serve it in a festive bowl, letting the colors of the vegetables peek through, and it’s always one of the first dishes to disappear. With the years, I learned to make two batches of this one, we eat the secon bowl on the next day while watching movies.
I’m not ashamed to confess that on more than one occasion, I’ve even had it for breakfast while the rest of the house was still in bed — it just tastes like Christmas, any time of day.
Ingredients: potatoes, carrots, peas, mayonnaise, canned tuna, salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice.
5. Smoked salmon crostini

These toasted baguette slices layered with herbed cream cheese, a delicate slice of smoked salmon, and a sprinkle of fresh dill are a weakness. Both for me and my youngest son. You can also add a squeeze of lemon or a tiny dollop od mustard.
These elegant little toasts look sophisticated but are surprisingly simple to assemble, and the smoky flavors make them an instant hit.
Ingredients: baguette slices, cream cheese, smoked salmon, dill, lemon juice, black pepper.
6. Cretan-style tirokafteri

This spicy, creamy cheese dip is one of Tolis’s absolute favorites — every holiday table in Crete seems to have a bowl of it! Traditionally, it’s made with fresh Myzithra cheese, but feta works beautifully too, giving it that unique flavor with a little kick from chili and garlic.
I love serving it with warm bread, crackers, or fresh vegetables, and it always disappears quickly, just like magic. For those who want to try it at home, you can find the full recipe on my blog here: Cretan Tirokafteri Recipe.
Ingredients: cucumber, cream cheese, dill, chives, parsley, salt, pepper.
7. Waldorf salad with Roquefort

This is another non-negotiable for me during the holidays — creamy, crunchy, tangy, and indulgent all at once. Combine green (or red) apples, boiled chicken breast, shredded into bite-sized pieces, celery, toasted walnuts, and bound together with a touch of cream and plenty of blue cheese — I always choose Roquefort.
Each bite is a mix of textures and flavors that feel festive and comforting, and it’s one of those dishes that disappears quickly because everyone can’t resist a taste.
Ingredients: green apple, boiled and shredded chicken breast, celery, salt, pepper, cream, toasted walnuts, plenty of Roquefort or another blue cheese.
8. Stuffed cherry tomatoes

These little gems are as charming as they are delicious. I make a small hole in each cherry tomato and fill it with a mixture of herbed cheese or feta. I season with fresh basil, olives, chives, or capers, and a drizzle of olive oil. Every bite bursts with flavor.
They’re tiny, colorful, and absolutely adorable on a holiday tray, making them perfect for guests to pick up and enjoy in one satisfying bite.
Ingredients: cherry tomatoes, cream cheese or feta, basil, chives (or olives, or capers), olive oil, salt, pepper.
9. Cretan-style charcuterie & fruit board

A colorful mix of Cretan cheeses like graviera or myzithra, slices of cured meats, olives, nuts, and fresh fruit such as grapes or crisp apple wedges.
A drizzle of thyme honey and a few barley rusks bring everything together, creating a board that looks festive without any effort at all. It’s the kind of centerpiece everyone naturally gathers around, and if you want to build your own version, you can find my full guide here: Cretan-Style Charcuterie Board.
Ingredients: Cretan cheeses, cured meats, olives, seasonal fruit, walnuts or almonds, thyme honey, barley rusks, chutney or tapenade.
10. Pigs in a blanket with cranberry mustard

Mini sausages wrapped in puff pastry are a classic holiday favorite — especially with kids, who always rush for them first (plain mustard on the side, of course!).
Bake them until perfectly golden and warm, and you’ve got a comforting, bite-sized appetizer that’s both festive and fun to serve.
Adults love them too, but there’s something about that first crispy, savory bite that makes them a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for all ages.
Ingredients: mini sausages, puff pastry or crescent dough, cranberry mustard, egg wash.
11. Mini brie and cranberry bites

These little phyllo cups filled with Brie and topped with cranberry sauce are one of my absolute favorites — a dish I first made for Thanksgiving but now make for every special occasion, from Christmas to New Year’s Eve.
The shells hold a warm center that pairs perfectly with the cranberry (an extra sprinkle of chopped pecans adds just the right touch of crunch).
Every year, they disappear faster than I can plate them, and I love watching my family and friends sneak back for seconds — a tiny, festive indulgence that always makes the holiday feel extra special.
Ingredients: mini phyllo cups or tart shells, Brie, cranberry sauce, chopped pecans (optional).
12. Spinach & feta phyllo pastry triangles

These golden, crispy triangles are a holiday favorite in our house, combining tender sautéed spinach, tangy feta, and a touch of garlic wrapped in flaky phyllo pastry.
Surprisingly easy to make, they’re perfect for serving warm as an appetizer or snack during Christmas or any special occasion. I love that they can be prepared ahead of time and baked just before guests arrive — always a hit with family and friends.
You can find my full recipe and step-by-step instructions here: Christmas Spanakopita Triangles.
Ingredients: phyllo pastry, fresh or frozen spinach, feta cheese, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper.
13. Baked Parmesan zucchini fries

Golden and impossibly satisfying, these baked zucchini fries are a lighter, healthier twist on a classic snack.
Coated in a mixture of Parmesan and breadcrumbs, they bake to a perfect crunch while staying tender inside, with just enough seasoning to make every bite irresistible.
They’re easy to prepare in large batches, making them ideal for holiday gatherings, and their cheesy, savory flavor ensures they disappear quickly from the appetizer tray. Serve them with a simple aioli or tomato dip for an extra festive touch.
Ingredients: zucchini, Parmesan, breadcrumbs, olive oil, garlic powder, salt, pepper.
14. Pumpkin Hummus

Creamy and naturally festive, this pumpkin hummus is one of my favorite seasonal dips. Perfect for Thanksgiving, it has also become a hit on our Christmas table thanks to its warm, slightly sweet, and savory flavor that pairs beautifully with fresh bread, crackers, or vegetable sticks.
Smooth, easy to prepare, and packed with autumnal spices, it’s an appetizer that disappears fast. For the full recipe and step-by-step instructions, check it out here: Fall Pumpkin Hummus.

15. Mini quesadillas

These little quesadillas are perfect for holiday gatherings — cheesy, flavorful, and easy to make in large batches. I fill small tortillas with a mix of melted cheese, black beans, and roasted peppers, then toast them until slightly crispy on the outside.
You can serve them as they are or Cut into wedges for snacking while mingling. They pair wonderfully with salsa, guacamole, or even sour cream for dipping. They are so quick to assemble that they’ll quickly become a favorite, ideal for kids and adults alike.
Ingredients: small tortillas, shredded cheese, black beans, roasted peppers, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole.
16. Garlic butter shrimp

This popular starter is so easy to make. Quickly cook the shrimp in a garlic and butter sauce. The garlic infuses the shrimp with aromas while a squeeze of fresh lemon adds a terrific finish.
These shrimp can be served warm as a finger food or plated as a small appetizer for a festive starter. They’re fast to make, full of flavor, and always disappear in a flash, making them one of my go-to dishes when I want something impressive with minimal fuss.
Ingredients: shrimp, butter, garlic, lemon juice, parsley, salt, pepper.
17. Stuffed dates with goat cheese & almonds

I love to transform simple dates into a festive little treat by filling them with goat cheese (on Crete we use myzithra or pichtogalo) and topping them with almonds—or wrapped in a thin slice of prosciutto for a salty-sweet twist.
Each bite is a mix of textures and flavors, perfect for holiday gatherings. Tiny, decadent, and irresistibly elegant, these little morsels always disappear fast from the appetizer tray.
Ingredients: pitted dates, goat cheese, almonds, prosciutto (optional).
18. Cretan dolmadakia

Something purely Cretan and deeply comforting: Vine leaves wrapped around a herby rice filling. I admit they’re not the quickest appetizer to make, but if you prepare a big batch ahead of time (or even open a can of good-quality ready-made ones), they become an effortless crowd-pleaser.
Serve them chilled or at room temperature with a generous side of creamy tzatziki — they’re a heavenly starter everyone adores.
Ingredients: vine leaves, rice, onions, fresh herbs like dill and mint, lemon, olive oil, salt, pepper.

19. Fig & brie crostini

Soft Brie cheese and figs are already a beautiful match, but when you layer them onto toasted baguette slices and a spoonful of fig jam (or whatever good jam you have on hand), they become pure holiday magic.
The warmth of the toast gently melts the Brie, the figs add a natural sweetness, and the jam ties everything together with a festive touch. A simple, elegant bite that feels far more luxurious than the effort it takes.
Ingredients: baguette slices, fig jam, Brie, honey, fresh thyme (optional).
20. Pear & blue cheese crostini

Thin slices of pear meet blue cheese in one of my all-time favorite combinations—because truly, I love anything with blue cheese.
Lightly toasted baguette rounds add the perfect crunch, while a drizzle of honey or a handful of chopped walnuts brings warmth and texture. Elegant, sweet-savory, and irresistibly festive, these crostini are a small holiday luxury that never disappoints.
Ingredients: baguette slices, pear, blue cheese, honey or balsamic glaze.
21. Guacamole & Chips

We make this all the time at home with the avocados Tolis cultivates here on the island—fresh, buttery, and unforgettable. We love it so much that it has also become a Christmas special we prepare every year.
Mashed avocado mixed with lime, tomato, onion, and cilantro (although we prefer parsley at home, and a bit of garlic too) creates a fantastic dip that’s always a hit, whether for everyday snacking or festive gatherings.
Ingredients: ripe avocados, lime juice, tomatoes, red onion, cilantro (or parsley, if you don’t like cilantro), minced garlic (optional), salt, tortilla chips.
22. Myzithra & Parmesan Cheese Cookies

Savory, crispy, and irresistibly cheesy, these traditional Cretan cookies combine the delicate tang of myzithra with the rich depth of Parmesan.
Perfect as a holiday nibble or an elegant addition to a festive cheese board, they offer a beautifully fragrant, buttery crunch in every bite. Easy to make and wonderfully versatile, they’re a unique crowd-pleaser with a distinctly Cretan character.
